As some of you know I started to get sick on Monday. Tuesday was when it really hit me. I woke up with a terrible migraine and horrible sinus infection. Well it was a difficult week, but I’m starting to finally feel more human. As much as I hated to get sick I’m glad it happened when it did. Just this past weekend my b.f. and I were at a beautiful wedding and had a really nice room at the Hilton. We pampered ourselves a bit by staying in bathrobes most of the visit  and ordering room services. We also spent most of Monday at the beautiful down town area of Naperville, IL. So I’m really glad the infection waited till Tuesday to really hit, because I would have been so disappointed if I was sick at the wedding and our day out. We had been looking forward to this weekend. Both of us have been stressed by work and school and it was much needed.
Since I started feeling human today I decided to pamper myself a bit. I started off by putting on a Freeman Clay Mask with Avocado and Oatmeal, and drank a couple hot cups of Adagio Forest Berries tea. I also took care of my poor chipping nails by taking off some old nail polish with this interesting nail polish remover I picked up while in China Town and used some Sally Hanson Continuous Hardening Treatment. When the mask finally dried I used this interesting compress veil, it is a soft but durable disposable towel, which I picked up at China Town (I’ll show you some pictures below). I first used it on my face for a few minutes to moisten the mask so it would be easier to take off. Then I used to help rub off the mask which felt great. Since my clay masks tend to leave a bit of grime behind I thought I’d use the compress veil to help clean out the sink. That little piece of towel paper certainly came in handy.
So I’m just a little curious. What are some of the things you guys do when you’re sick to make you feel human again?

Burned: Smashbox Edition

One thing that really sucks when you’re poor is to spend a lot of money on high end make up and it doesn’t turn out well. So, Smashbox is a highly rate very popular cruelty free cosmetic brand. They are  out of my current price range, but I saw two great boxed kits I thought would be good to try. One was the Complexion Perfection and I felt like you got a lot of great travel size products for $49. The second was only $19 and you get a wide variety of trial size items. Since I was new to the brand I really didn’t know what to try and thought both of these kits had a wide variety of items and that it would give me a good feel for the company. It did do that, but not in the way I was hoping. In the end I decided I will most likely never buy from this company again. *Below I did list the links so you may check them out for yourself.

I’ll talk about the Complexion Perfection first since that one upset me the most. One thing that immediately made me nervous was that besides choosing fair, light, and medium you couldn’t pick your colors. I’m pretty light skinned, but not quite fair skin, so I thought the swatches on the light skinned box looked like it would be a good match. I was soooooo disappointed when I actually received the product. Just about all the products are incredibly dark and don’t blend well. I have such a hard time believe this is considered to be for light skinned. I even tried writing to the company but after waiting for over a week I received an email from CONSUMERCARE-US saying they were unable to address my concern!?! Thanks for the great customer service Smashbox! Besides the colors being terrible I tried it anyway. The primer made me break out really bad, which I thought was odd since I’ve never noticed my skin being sensitive before. I stopped using the primer after a few days. I notice after about a week and a half my skin just wasn’t clearing up. During this time I was trying the foundation. It seem liked no matter how much I blended or buffed it in I couldn’t get rid of the orangey glow I had. So I was mixing it with a much lighter foundation to try and lighten it up. I realized that this foundation, even though I was using a minuet amount, was actually making me break out. I’ve never broken out from cosmetics before so this really surprised me. So I stopped using all the products. One other thing that is frustrating about this set is that I noticed they have a large selection of fair, light and medium shades. Yet, they chose one of the darkest shades for the light!?! I looked into the fair kit, because I thought about exchanging it for that if I ever heard back from customer service. Well in the fair kit they put the lightest possible foundation!?! I thought it would be better to choose a middle shade, because it’ll be easier to light up or darken. Who knows. I’m no professional.

The second from the top is the color I got. The larger swatch to the left is suppose to be my foundation.

This is what I actually got

Now on to the Try it Kit, which again I thought this was a good deal, and again most of the products were a bust. I didn’t bother with the primer since I knew that it broke me out. The eye liner smudged badly. I’m used to the eyeliner running on my waterline, but it didn’t last well on the upper lid either. I even tried setting it with a powder and it still looked terrible after just a few hours. The mascara was a joke. It didn’t do much of anything except for darken my lashes. I’ve gotten better results from my Lacura brand that’s 99 cents at Aldi’s. The only thing that I liked and still use is the lip enhancing lip gloss. It’s a beautiful color, conditions well, and lasts. The only thing I did not like was when my lips were badly chapped to the point of peeling the glitter in the gloss actually hurt my lips.

So in all I would personally never buy any of these products again. Not only did most of their products break me out, but I was also majorly disappointed in the customer service. When I’m spending over $70 I do expect a lot from the company and the products, but that could just be me. My advice for anyone else interested would be to buy the sample kits first. I would go to a place like Sephora or Ulta where you can actually try the foundations on yourself so that you can make sure the color will be a good fit. I recently found out that Make Up Forever has a similar kit that is a bit more expensive, but you can at least choose your own color.  As for the barely used products and products not used at all maybe someday I can do a blog sale. Since, there are a lot of people out there who do like their products and have not had the issues I’ve had.

Haul: Mini lipstick Haul

So while shopping today at Jewel* for the big snow storm, which I’m sure will turn into nothing, I came across a nice Wet n Wild sale. They had the entire line was 40%, but since I’m trying to use up my eye shadow I decided to look at their lip products. As usual it’s fairly cheap feeling package that I came to expect from Wet n Wild and I don’t care. As long as it’s good quality I will forgo nice packaging. The only thing that is a bit different is the lids, which are extremely tight and almost hard to get off. The super tight lids have made me ding my lipstick just a bit, but oh well the lipsticks are worth it. They are very creamy and both have a nice intense color. Sorry I can’t tell you how long these last. When I do wear lipstick it’s not for long, because I’m always drinking water and my boyfriend won’t kiss me with anything on my lips. Not that I blame him. I also finally picked up one of the Milani lip flashes which I have been looking at forever. They were also 20% off today at Jewel. I just had to pick up 06 Flashy because that is the one that has always jumped out at me. Though I believe I tend to wear a more dramatic eye makeup than most people I usually don’t wear much on my lips. So I’ll be saving this for a girls night out or concert.

Wet n Wild- 919B Vamp it up that is such an intense dark purple it looks almost black.

Milani lip flash – 06 Flashy It is a much more vibrant pink, but my camera is washing it out making it look like a baby pearl pink. It’s a nice hot pink with pink glitter.

<3 Introduction <3

I’m 29 (ugh almost 30) and live in the Chicagoland area. I am a full-time student, and I currently work part-time at one of Chicago’s most visited attractions. I’m far from a professional, but I just love playing with make-up and talking about it. I first started this blog under the name beauty by msdarkmetal, but I quickly found that the title just doesn’t work well for me. As I mention I don’t work often, which means, I don’t shop often. I’m finding it hard to keep up with a beauty blog when I don’t jump on the new craze bandwagon till much later, don’t shop often, go through long periods where I don’t where make up, and frankly I’m sick of buying a crap ton of make up that I don’t use. Plus, I tend to be all over the place with my hobbies. So, I believe this blog is in a desperate need of a change of direction. This is why I changed the name to randomness by msdarkmetal because I feel it will fit with the direction of blog.

So what do I plan on doing with my blog? Well, I’ve become quite into pinterests and would love to share my board of I don’t just pin it, I do it. Along with the success and failures I’ve had with various items I’ve tried on pinterest. I’m also a big thrifter and am interested in doing more vintage/clothing/thrifting hauls.

F.A.Q.’s –made up by moi
How long have you been into makeup?
I’ve been wearing make-up since I was in high school, but didn’t get super obsessed till about two years ago.

What is your style?
I’m not a high fashion person. I don’t follow the trends. I wear what I like and what I feel comfortable in. My make-up looks have quite a bit of color, but are on the darker side. I do love color and use a lot of purples, blues, hot pinks, golds, and greens.

What are you hoping to accomplish by this?
-Well, self, that’s a good question. I always thought it would be fun to get involved in blogs and youtube, even if I only connect with a few people. I’m not aiming to have 200,000 subscribers or anything. I just want to share knowledge and experiences I’ve had since playing around with make-up, and hopefully meet some really cool people.

What inspired you?
-I didn’t use youtube much unless I was looking for music videos. Then one year my boyfriend and I went to a Zombie Prom and I was massively disappointed in the “professional” make-up job I received. So I was determined to learn how to do some easy FX make-up. I then discovered a whole community/world of make-up on youtube. Ever since then I became even more obsessed with make-up and have learned so much. Besides youtube I’m constantly inspired by pinterest and beauty bloggers.

Who do you follow on youtube?
I’m always looking for new and interesting people who have a unique look or different advice. Below are the following people who looks are unique and offer a lot of great advice.

The unique Heather
The lovely Cora
The bitchtastic Petrilude whose name I believe is Josh
The knowledgeable Emily
Last but not least the amazing Angie

WARNINGS I am extremely sarcastic and may use strong words.

*Chicagoland- People from the North, West, and South suburbs who don’t really live in the city, but they want you to think they live really friggin’ close. Hell that term is even used by folks who live in NWI.
